A dialogue between works from the FRAC Alsace collection and the Lalique Museum
A selection of works from the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (FRAC) Alsace will be displayed until 29 March alongside a choice of pieces from the Lalique Museum’s own collection. For this first collaboration, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through a certain vision of paradise. The exhibits give visitors the opportunity to encounter birds and insects of all kinds, and to discover the diversity of a plant world that evokes the luxuriance of the Garden of Eden. They are all subjects and shapes that inspired René Lalique, a jeweller who went on to become a master glassmaker. Lalique’s successors continued the tradition, and a number of contemporary artists have provided new interpretations of these themes.
Human figures make a discreet and gradual appearance in the exhibition. ‘Eve giving Adam a ticking-off’, a photograph by Darbelley and Jacquelin, is a pivotal moment, and a turning point in the scenography. Lalique’s ‘Serpent’ vase, and the piece entitled ‘Apple’ reinforce the story of the original couple, though the narrative is told here through the liberties that contemporary artistic creation inevitably takes. The exhibition gives human figures an increasingly important role.
Jewellery, glass works, photographs, videos and sculptures offer a secular vision of a ‘paradise’ that visitors are invited to explore.
The partnership with FRAC Alsace
Created in 1982 by the Ministry of Culture and the Regional Council as part of a decentralisation policy, the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain – FRAC Alsace contributes to the support and development of contemporary creation through a policy of acquisition, dissemination of works of art and awareness-raising among the widest possible audience.
FRAC Alsace currently has a rich collection of 1,170 works of art from 1954 to the present day, representing nearly 700 artists.
FRAC Alsace is funded by the Ministry of Culture – DRAC Grand Est and the Grand Est Region. It has the support of the Académie de Strasbourg.
